It Starts with a Garment’s Carbon Footprint

When we purchase a new piece of clothing, it has likely already traveled thousands of kilometers and consumed vast quantities of water and energy. Research indicates that emissions from the fashion industry account for nearly 2% of the global total. Therefore, choosing renewable energy sources and minimizing dye waste are not merely cold, abstract statistics; rather, they are matters that directly impact the very air we breathe and the water we drink.

Circularity is not a distant future; it is the old T-shirt currently in your hands—not destined for the trash bin, but rather for deconstruction and regeneration, transformed once again into new fibers. The European Union has already begun banning the destruction of unsold clothing, and digital product passports are set to launch soon. Although the current rate of "garment-to-garment" recycling stands at less than 1%, this figure represents a boundless realm of possibilities waiting to be unlocked. Transparency is the foundation of trust; every garment is akin to a "growth diary." Where did its materials originate? Were any harmful chemicals used in its production? Future clothing labels will no longer merely display size and price; instead, they will tell a story that anyone can understand. Only when brands reveal the truth will consumers be willing to remain loyal. Consumers are willing to pay a premium—provided they do so willingly. Some are prepared to pay 10% more for eco-friendly products, but on one condition: the garment must be more durable, demonstrate tangible sincerity regarding its environmental credentials, and resonate on an emotional level. True sustainable consumption should not be a source of pressure, but rather a joyful choice. A Bridge Between East and West: In China, the "Dual Carbon Goals" are driving the transformation of manufacturing facilities; in France and across Europe, regulatory frameworks have made environmental compliance a mandatory requirement. When these forces from both sides converge, a single garment can be simultaneously eco-friendly, fully compliant with regulations, and highly competitive in the marketplace.
